Do we truly know the spirit of Jezebel?

  • Did Jezebel wear red lipstick or a red dress?
  • Did she seduce men?

Do we understand the spirit of Delilah?

  • Was Delilah a sex symbol who seduced men?
  • Did Delilah seduce for wealth and riches?

Both spirits are prevalent today and are misappropriated in respect to the character of both women. However, we will discuss the spirit of Jezebel today and why men are wary and have a trepidation when confronted with this spirit.

Jezebel’s story is found in 1 and 2 Kings. She was the daughter of Ethbaal, king of Tyre/Sidon and priest of the cult of Baal, a cruel, sensuous and revolting false god whose worship involved sexual degradation and lewdness. Ahab, king of Israel, married Jezebel and led the nation into Baal worship (1 Kings 16:31). Their reign over Israel is one of the saddest chapters in the history of God’s people.

The bible does not depict Jezebel as a women in red. It does delineate two incidents that reveal the spirit of Jezebel. One trait is her obsessive passion for domineering and controlling others, especially in the spiritual realm. Her strongest enemy when she was queen was Elijah who demanded a contest on Mount Carmel between the powers of Israel’s God and the powers of Jezebel and the priests of Baal (1 Kings 18). However, despite hearing of the miraculous powers of Jehovah, Jezebel refused to repent and swore on her gods that she would pursue Elijah relentlessly and take his life. Her stubborn refusal to see and submit to the power of the living God would lead her to a hideous end (2 Kings 9:29-37).

Women, this controlling spirit causes a men to retreat for the cave.  The stubbornness provokes the spirit of pride– no submission.  A man can have sex, go to work everyday and be in a cave.  You ask what is he thinking and he says nothing.  Once he has determined the cave is his security, he can take out the trash and never return home.

The second incident involves a righteous man named Naboth who refused to sell to Ahab land adjoining the palace, rightly declaring that to sell his inheritance would be against the Lord’s command (1 Kings 21:3; Leviticus 25:23). While Ahab sulked and fumed on his bed, Jezebel taunted him and ridiculed him for his weakness, then proceeded to have the innocent Naboth framed and stoned to death. Naboth’s sons were also stoned to death, so there would be no heirs and the land would revert to the possession of the king. Such a single-minded determination to have one’s way, no matter who is destroyed in the process, is a characteristic of the Jezebel spirit.

Proverb talks about a brawling women. It is better to be on the rooftop. Proverbs also illustrates the virtuous women… she does glorify the man.  Men and women do think differently.  When a man ask do you trust me, he is not talking about infidelity,  He means, if  he tells you his fears and secretes will you use it against him. When he falls, who will catch him.  We know women that most likely he will catch us when we fall.

This is a spirit that must be checked in our relationships and in the church. It cannot just be cast out, but leadership must get in their place so it cannot survive. We must  make a decision to humble ourselves before the all might God, and have a consonant/congruous spirit with our spouse. A spirit of acquiescence is paramount with our Pastor and leadership.
